Everyone in every industry has a cell phone these days. When the coverage is good, they work well. But there are situations and applications where cell phones fall short and digital radios provide more reliable, instant communications with flexible features.
Digital radio systems are designed for a specific venue and do not rely on a carrier’s nearest cell tower to provide acceptable signal strength. Radios work 100% of the time. Many of us have experienced a situation when the local cell tower gets overloaded and actually blocks calls (ever been around a stadium at game time?). Using cellular voice or texting can also be slow at critical times. A properly designed radio system can provide more reliable voice and data communication that is almost instantaneous.
Cell phones primarily work on a one-to-one calling basis. Two-way radios give you the flexibility to contact various talk groups instantly. Communication from one to many is especially important during an emergency.

- Education: Digital radios are critical when it comes to school safety, as they provide a way to send an instant alert to the staff when a teacher notices something suspicious. Safety teams can open and close doors in the school using the digital radio and a dispatcher can bridge the 2-way system with the First Responders for immediate action.
- Hospitality: The hospitality market uses digital radios to provide seamless communications to all hotel service teams and to provide quick response to guest requests. New digital radio systems have the capability to handle work-order ticket management so all repairs can be tracked efficiently. There is now an application that allows cell phone users to talk directly through the radio system, giving even more flexibility to the communications system as a whole.
- Manufacturing: Two-way radio systems provide many benefits to manufacturing companies. On the production floor, cell coverage is usually spotty at best and the environment can be extremely noisy. Two-way radios and earpieces have a noise-reduction feature built in to allow for better voice communication. These radios are designed to be rugged and can withstand heavy use, drops and harsh environments involving dust and water. The longer battery life allows the radios to perform two shifts without a charge, and texting is possible through the digital radios.
Already using radios? There are many other features available today on new two-way digital radio systems that can enhance coverage and provide applications that weren’t available with analog networks. In many environments, two-way radios have a distinct advantage over the cell phones.
